Elephant Hawk-Moth

Elephant Hawk-Moth; Deilephila Elpenor
One of the most beautiful moths you will ever see, the Elephant Hawk-Moth gets it's name because the caterpillar looks like an elephant's trunk. The caterpillar also has two enormous black eye spots towards the head. They will swell up to make the "eyes" appear larger when they feel in danger.

The moth is mainly olive green with bright pink bars on the wings and body, keep an eye out at dusk between May- August to see these stunning creatures in flight.

The caterpillars overwinter under low foliage or underground as Chrysalides.
